Announcing Just Fare’s Community Impact Program

Over the past year, Just Fare has learned and evolved beyond our wildest projections. Our mission has always been to do good in our community and have a positive impact on our industry, but we’ve sometimes struggled to balance that with the demands of the market and our bottom line. To be clear, we’ve never rolled around in profits, but we do aim to make a profit each year that sustains our business and benefits both our employees and our community.

Launching a charitable arm, Just Fare Community Kitchen, in May 2020 was a game changer. It arose instinctually from a need that we saw in our community, and it also gave us a platform to participate in larger conversations about the food system and food justice and a vessel to channel funding towards donated meals and community programs. For social mission businesses to work and endure there usually needs to be a diverse and blended revenue and funding strategy, as we’re embarking on now.

Tastes Good. Does Good.

We’re excited to announce for 2021 and moving forward, with our imminent re-entry into Workplace food and the launch of a Delivery-only restaurant, the Just Fare Community Impact Program that donates 1% of our revenue from Delivery, Workplace, Design and Events to support donated meals for the Bay Area community, along with opportunities for clients and customers to have an additional impact.

Ways Just Fare supports the Community Impact Program:

  1. Just Fare commits 1% of revenue across our business (Delivery, Workplace, Design, Events) to support donated meals and programs from our Community Kitchen charitable arm.

  2. Just Fare supports paid volunteer time for employees: 16 hours per person per year to volunteer within their communities (launching soon).

Ways you can support the Community Impact Program:

  1. Workplace Clients: We’re all about flexibility!

    • Add an additional donation to monthly invoices or a set amount annually

    • Match Fare’s 1% donation on your invoice

    • Donate your normal meal value during days your workplace is closed (i.e. holidays) or headcount is reduced for an offsite event.

  2. Event Clients: Give your event extra impact by adding an additional donation amount to event fees.

  3. Everyone: Make a tax deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor, 18 Reasons. We love socially responsible corporate giving!

Client Perks

We want to show you what your commitment to impact means to the community. We’ll report back to you regularly on the number of donated meals your contribution has produced, and show our appreciation with these optional perks:

Impact

We are committed to reporting back to you on the impact of your donations, as well as ours. When we report back to you, we’ll include the total number of meals that your donations support based on the meal cost and breakdown below.

Here are our projections for the impact of the contributions we’ll be making this year and next year:

Just Fare Monetary Contributions:

  • 2020: $204,000 (we self-funded the start-up costs for Community Kitchen to get it going!)

  • 2021: $18,109 / 2,480 donated meals

  • 2022: $85,845 / 11,760 donated meals

Just Fare Paid Volunteer Hours Contributions:

  • 2021: $16,933

  • 2022: $27,763

Cost breakdown of a single Community Kitchen meal

Operational expenses and overhead include office supplies, software/hardware, marketing, HQ/HR support, smallwares, equipment and janitorial; facility costs include rent and utilities.

* A note on partner organization compensation: We compensate our community partners for each day that they distribute our meals to the community. We made compensating partners for their work distributing Community Kitchen meals a part of our model as soon as we could (starting in October 2020), and it’s part of a more sustainable model for food assistance work. It also means that we can partner with smaller grassroots organizations that reach deeper into communities and/or reach communities that traditional resources typically don’t.

We are excited to launch this program so that we and you can have even more positive impact, and we’d love to talk to you more about it!
